Language Arts
Students will read a variety of genres including fiction and nonfiction. Students will be expected to analyze what they read, compare it to other texts and their world, and be able to write about it. Students will record their reading homework on a Bingo Reading Log that should be signed by parents once a week. We will continue vocabulary acquisition to improve reading and writing.

We will write every day. We will analyze good writing, learn techniques to make writing better, and practice! Students will write Response to Literature, Narrative, and Research based pieces all year. We will focus on Opinion Writing in the first and fourth quarters and Informational Writing in the second and third quarters.
Good grammar helps writers communicate more effectively. Understanding grammar helps readers determine meaning as they read. Between the two of these, grammar is key to improving literacy skills. We will study parts of speech, punctuation, innovative uses of language, and sentence types.

Students will be expected to use correct spelling in their daily assignments and writing pieces. We will study common word patterns, suffixes, prefixes, root words, and Greek & Latin roots.
